Premier League Match Report (15/07/20): Newcastle 1-3 Spurs

Match Report (GW36): Newcastle 1-3 Spurs
Following the controversial decision to overturn Manchester City’s Champions League ban, the hope of finishing in Champions League places for Spurs had come to an end. They still had the chance of Europa League football next season and a strong finish. Newcastle are still looking to climb the table, with recent results against Spurs a good omen for the Toon, they will be hoping to do the double over Spurs this season. Jose Mourinho has never won a game at St James Park, and the Portuguese would like to have the run come to an end.
Up until the first drinks break there wasn’t anything about this game, it was a scrappy affair with both teams finding their way into the game. A recent trend in recent weeks is of goal activity immediately following the drinks breal Interplay between Spurs front men sees Mourinho’s men carve the first good chance of the game, Lo Celso gets the assist for Son who places it between Yedlin’s legs and past Dubravka to give Spurs the lead. Two mins later he could have had another, but the Dubravka makes a tremendous save. The Toon goalkeeper has made the most saves this season and with Spurs trying hard for a second Newcastle need Dubravka to keep them in the game.
Newcastle’s best chance of the first half fell to Dwight Gayle who hits the bar after a Jonjo Shelvey cross in the 42nd minute. Spurs finished the first half with their goal lead intact, with a big forty-five minutes ahead for Newcastle.
The second half saw the game open up, and Newcastle did get back into the game. After a defensive mishap by Aurier who failed to clear, the ball fell to Matt Ritchie in the 56th minute, and with a venomous shot of power into the right corner Newcastle found the equaliser. Their lead didn’t last long, as substitute Steven Bergwijn found Harry Kane just a few minutes later. The England captain scored with a header Dubravka couldn’t save.
Lazaro and Shelvey both had good chances in the 71st and 74th minute, but they couldn’t convert. Rueing this luck, Spurs capitalised on Newcastle throwing bodies forward. Hit on the counter Lamela dribbled past the Newcastle defence who were guilty of ball watching, and the Argentine’s shot was parried by Dubravka straight in the path of Harry Kane who scored a diving header to make it 3-1 in the 90th minute. Kane also dived into Fernandez in the follow up and acted like he had been hit by a truck but was fine a minute later.
The goal was a hammer blow to Newcastle ended the game, and broke Mourinho’s long run of never having won at St James Park.

The difference for Spurs today was having Harry Kane in the right place at the right time. Scoring two headers, the recent lockdown has been a chance for Mourinho to have Kane fit for the end of the season. Kane triggered the sequence of passing that led to Son’s opener and got the last two for his own tally. This game needed some quality, and Kane was the best that Spurs offered against the Toon today.
NEW 1-3 TOT - Insight and Analysis:
The first-half was a drab watch, it just wasn’t entertaining at all. Two defensive managers cancelling each other out. Spurs quality eventually overcome the tightly thought lines of the Toon defence, who just weren’t at the races. I don’t really have an opinion about this match, I did expect Spurs to win though with Lascelles out for Newcastle.
