MLS Fantasy 2018: Gameweek 24 - Captaincy Picks

Picking a Captain to double down on in MLS Fantasy is the most important choice ahead of each of the 34 regular season Gameweek's in MLS's season. There's a lot of self-help out there for MLS enthusiasts, with our Hype Team providing three major considerations for the armband for each and every Gameweek. We'll be detailing the top choice for captain in home and away matches, and a Wildcard pick of our choosing to add to the chaos. All aboard.
MLS Fantasy: Gameweek Deadline
For the 2018 MLS Fantasy season there is a 'Rolling Lockout', which means you can make substitutions and transfers until the second a player's game kicks off, which means you can chop and change your lineup as any Gameweek progresses.
You can view the schedule and a real time Gameweek deadline countdown clock (in the London GMT timezone) on our dedicated MLS Fantasy page.

Captaincy in MLS Fantasy
There are a few differences with picking a captain in MLS compared to playing other games such as FPL. The major element to note with our Captaincy article is that we'll be picking a captain who is playing home and away, as well as a Wildcard player of our own choosing.
We've listed the differences below that make captaincy in MLS Fantasy unique:
- With the Rolling Lockout, you can change your captain until the selected captaincy pick plays
- Once the team your captaincy pick takes to the field, you can no longer change your captain
- If your captaincy pick doesn't play, then you'll end up with nothing
- There is no option to select a vice captain

Gameweek 24: Home Captain
Fixture: LA Galaxy vs. Minnesota United
Player: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (LA)
Position: Forward (CF)
Player Price: $11.0 million
After missing the MLS AllStar game against Juventus, and Week 23’s 2-1 away defeat at Colorado Rapids due to suspension, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back in contention for LA Galaxy this weekend, which by measure of his own form, puts him at the summit of captaincy contention this weekend.
Currently backed by 6.73% of players, with many still to set their teams ahead of the weekend, Zlatan has scored 15 goals in 17 MLS matches and looks an aerial challenge too tall to overcome for many league defences.
11 goals from his last 7 starts puts Ibrahimovic in a position of absolute dominance this week, and we are banking on the Swedish international to continue his goal-scoring habits when Adrian Heath’s side rock up to the StubHub Center.
LA Galaxy, who are currently 5th in the Western Conference with 35 points from 23 games, host Minnesota in a match with huge play-off implications. A win for the Galaxy will condemn Minnesota to being 10 points behind the Californian side with 11 matches left to play, a big hurdle to potentially overcome. An away win will put Minnesota within 4 points of LA. The margins in the West are tight, which puts Zlatan as the difference maker in LA’s pursuit for success.

Gameweek 24: Away Captain
Fixture: Chicago Fire vs. New York Red Bulls
Player: Bradley Wright-Phillips (RBNY)
Position: Forward (CF)
Player Price: $10.0 million
When picking an away captain, we usually go through the fixtures and pick out teams that are capable of winning on the road – and believe us, there is no pattern or consistency aside from with Atlanta. MLS clubs on the whole are unreliable to bank on with away assts, unless we’re talking about constant MLS Fantasy performers (Moralez, Lodeiro, Martinez, Almiron, etc). The eye-catching team away from home this week, without doubt, is New York Red Bulls.
If all else fails, bank on the players that find the net on a regular basis, and by that definition Bradley Wright-Phillips is an automatic pick against a Chicago Fire side who will be heartbroken after losing to Philadelphia Union in the U.S. Open Cup semi-finals against Philadelphia Union.
BWP’s 14 strikes this season is only bettered by Ibrahimovic (15) and Josef Martinez (26), so it’s an all-out assault on goal potential this week. The Englishman missed the all-important penalty against Juventus in the MLS AllStar game (it had to be an Englishman, didn’t it?), though recently surpassed 100 goals for the Red Bulls.
The Red Bulls have destiny in their own hands in the Eastern Conference, with 2 games in hand over Atlanta, who are 4 points clear at the top of the table, and the overall standings. Victory against Chicago this weekend would tighten the gap to a single point as Atlanta are the only team with a bye-week for Week 24.

Gameweek 24: Wildcard Captain
Fixture: Portland Timbers vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
Player: Diego Valeri (POR)
Position: Midfielder (CAM)
Player Price: $11.5 million
Our last captaincy selection was the star of Week 23’s curtain-raising Fall Season. With the Argentine midfielder scoring 17 points, and earning a place as our Player of the Week.
What makes Valeri the perfect choice as our differential captain is that his 6.88% ownership heading in to a home encounter against Vancouver Whitecaps is criminally low, with the majority of players overlooking the playmaker, and Portland’s form in general.
Valeri has registered double-digit returns from his last 6 MLS appearance, and Vancouver have found life on the road difficult this season and look prone to concede more at the weekend.
