MLS Fantasy 2018: Gameweek 22 - Captaincy Picks
Picking a Captain to double down on in MLS Fantasy is the most important choice ahead of each of the 34 regular season Gameweek's in MLS's season. There's a lot of self-help out there for MLS enthusiasts, with our Hype Team providing three major considerations for the armband for each and every Gameweek. We'll be detailing the top choice for captain in home and away matches, and a Wildcard pick of our choosing to add to the chaos. All aboard.
MLS Fantasy: Gameweek Deadline
For the 2018 MLS Fantasy season there is a 'Rolling Lockout', which means you can make substitutions and transfers until the second a player's game kicks off, which means you can chop and change your lineup as any Gameweek progresses.
You can view the schedule and a real time Gameweek deadline countdown clock (in the London GMT timezone) on our dedicated MLS Fantasy page.
Captaincy in MLS Fantasy
There are a few differences with picking a captain in MLS compared to playing other games such as FPL. The major element to note with our Captaincy article is that we'll be picking a captain who is playing home and away, as well as a Wildcard player of our own choosing.
We've listed the differences below that make captaincy in MLS Fantasy unique:
- With the Rolling Lockout, you can change your captain until the selected captaincy pick plays
- Once the team your captaincy pick takes to the field, you can no longer change your captain
- If your captaincy pick doesn't play, then you'll end up with nothing
- There is no option to select a vice captain

Gameweek 22: Home Captain
Fixtures: D.C. United vs. New York Red Bulls & D.C. United vs. Colorado Rapids
Player: Wayne Rooney (DC)
Position: Forward (CF)
Player Price: $9.6 million
We begin our captaincy round up with the most sceptical pick of the season, no question. Wayne Rooney's arrival to MLS went under the radar for many in Europe and the rest of the world as viewers were captivated by the World Cup in Russia. Slowly but surely though, Rooney's arrival in Washington is starting to wake up casual audiences who are seeing for the former England captain in a new light.
From what we've seen of D.C. United since Rooney's arrival, they're not afraid to play short passes in attacking areas with runners off the ball, with Rooney finding himself at the heart of the attack. There was some speculation about Rooney's place in United's side, but it is clear that his place is fighting with Darren Mattocks up top.
Only D.C. and San Jose feature twice at home this week, but we're going big with a prediction that Rooney nothces his first goal in the next few matches, especially as United are still in the midst of a honeymoon period at Audi Field.
New York Red Bulls will head into the midweek encounter as huge favourites, though it is a later clash with Colorado Rapids at the weekend has has wet our lips at Rooney and Yamil Asad's potential this week.
Gameweek 22: Away Captain
Fixtures: Orlando City vs. NYCFC & Seattle Sounders vs. NYCFC
Player: Maxi Moralez (NYCFC)
Position: Midfielder (CAM)
Player Price: $14.0 million
After missing Week 21 with a Bye Week, NYCFC enter the fold again with back-to-back Double Gameweek's for Fantasy players, and there's only one place to start.
Maxi Moralez continues his tag of being the MLS Fantasy bridesmaid to Atlanta's highly-coveted Miguel Almiron, but it could be the attacking midfielder who has the final laugh this week.
NYC have two games in hand over Atlanta, and are just 4 points behind in the Eastern Conference standings. Atlanta travel to Montreal Impact whilst the light blue of City travel to Orlando before a difficult encounter with Seattle Sounders. Win both, and there is the possibility of claiming top spot in the east.
Moralez has been pivotal to NYC's hopes this season, and has stepped up to the plate every single time David Villa is an injury risk. Moralez will be likely fighting out his captaincy selection with our final selection in this article, though with NYC's elite standing in the table, it's most likely that you'll want to back a sure horse in the race this week.
Hitting double-digits for assists in his last round of games, the bare minimum is Moralex's inclusion. Captaincy just depends on how much you rate Zlatan's chances against LAFC and Orlando City.
Gameweek 22: Wildcard Captain
Fixtures: LAFC vs. LA Galaxy & LA Galaxy vs. Orlando City
Player: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (LA)
Position: Forward (CF)
Player Price: $10.2 million
Without much thought, we've inadvertently promoted two former Manchester United forward's as captaincy options this week, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic joining Wayne Rooney in contention ahead of Week 22.
With Rooney, the selection is purely speculative at this point, with the Englishman still settling to life in the Unites States, whilst Zlatan has not only found his feet, his current form is tearing teams to shreds.
Ibrahimovic has started 6 of the last 7 MLS matches for LA Galaxy, scoring 9 goals in 6 matches, with 3 braces, an assist, and 73 points in that time, which more that eclipses the 10 points-per-game ratio.
With LA Galaxy finding serious form in MLS, they've jumped up to 4th in the Western Conference and are serious contenders for a play-off place this season, and will be salivating at the prospect of being the first team to beat LAFC at the Banc of California Stadium, with the script perfectly written after Zlatan's incredible debut against LAFC during Week 5.
If you're picking a player based purely on form, Zlatan is the man. If you're going for the safe points, Moralez gets your pick. There's just something about the Swede right now though that is unstoppable, and it'll be hard not to bank on his talents in a pair of huge matches this week.
