MLS Fantasy 2018: Gameweek 16 Review - Player of the Week
After each round of matches for MLS Fantasy players, we'll be providing our Player of the Week, the player who we think is deserving of top spot, even if they didn't finish on the most points for a week. We'll take a look at the impact the player is having on his team, as well as the MLS Fantasy returns that they are providing. Strap in, it's time to get nostalgic. All aboard.
MLS Fantasy: Gameweek 17
For the 2018 MLS Fantasy season there is a 'Rolling Lockout', which means you can make substitutions and transfers until the second a player's game kicks off, which means you can chop and change your lineup as any Gameweek progresses.
You can view the schedule and a real time Gameweek deadline countdown clock (in the London GMT timezone) on our dedicated MLS Fantasy page.
MLS Fantasy Week 16 - Player of the Week: Victor Vazquez (Toronto)
With the World Cup now in full swing, for a very short period of time MLS goes away whilst international football takes to the main stage of our attention. In doing so MLS left its Fantasy players with another above average Gameweek which featured 6 games, and an incredible 4-4 between hosts Toronto, and a D.C. United side who were given no chance of getting a result before the start of the match.
Toronto's Last 5 MLS Results
Week 12: Toronto 2-1 Orlando City
Week 13: Toronto 0-1 FC Dallas
Week 14: Columbus Crew 3-3 Toronto
Week 15: Philadelphia Union 0-2 Toronto
Week 16: Toronto 4-4 D.C. United
The draw for Toronto means that the reigning MLS Cup holders have only lost 1 of their last 5 matches, but despite that are rooted in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with just 15 points from 14 matches played, and only D.C. United are beneath them in the table.
When selecting a Player of the Week it was obviously hard to overlook the 4-4 draw at BMO Field, with Victor Vazquez managing a goal and 2 assists in a turbulent back and forth contest between sides that don't seem to know which way is up right now.
Vazquez's contenders this week, who were popular picks heading into Week 16 are Montreal's Ignacio Piatti, New England's Diego Fagundez, and San Jose's Danny Hoesen, but it is Vasquez who edges it with superior attacking returns in a match that will talk about for a long, long time.
Victor Vazquez's Week 16 Points - Toronto 4-4 D.C. United:
90 mins played: 2pts
1 goal: 5pts
2 assists: 6pts
69 passes: 1pt
7 recoveries: 1pt
4 shots: 1pt
Total: 16pts
Offensively, Toronto lived up to the hype and were the overwhelming favourites when it come to positional rankings, captaincy choices, and general expectancy for points returns. Defensively this past midweek round of games was a disaster, but it was the likes of Vasquez and Piatti who really came to the aid of players this week more than anyone else.
Life doesn't get any easier for Toronto, and with play-off hopes drastically slipping away they travel to NYCFC for Week 17, which will be Domènec Torrent's first game in charge since the departure of Patrick Vieira. We don't think Toronto players will be heavily considered when the time arrives to select our Fantasy teams.
