WEEKLY WILDCARDS 2017/18: FPL Gameweek 36
Ahead of each round of Premier League games The Hype Train analyses the best wildcard player options for your Fantasy Premier League teams. Historically, weekly FPL Dream Team’s comprise of mostly differential players whose selection falls with a low selection percentage of overall players, to which there is no doubt that their influence cannot be ignored. With such an abundance of points coming from the FPL’s hidden gems The Hype Train selects one player from each Premier League match in the upcoming Gameweek to decide who could be the differential that sets your team apart. All aboard.
WILDCARDS: WHAT IS A DIFFERENTIAL PLAYER?
The rules for the 2015/16 season were easy enough to follow. The only rule was that a player had be to selected by less than 5% of the FPL's populace. With 2016/17's price changes, and player selection trends, we were been forced to revise our rules on what constitutes a differential. Now in the 2017/18 season, after testing the waters with selection, there are just not enough differentials with the classification in each position from years past, so we have introduced position specific rules regarding what is and isn't a wildcard/differential player in the FPL that we believe is representative to the game this season.
Goalkeepers
- Any shot stopper outside of the top 8 selected. A differential Goalkeeper is now considered outside of the top bracket due to the overwhelming ownership selection % of the top 8 GK's for any one Gameweek.
- A GK's ownership must not exceed 10%
Defenders
- A Defender's ownership must fall below 8%, with the top 20 owned defenders all harbouring 8% ownership or more.
- The Outsider Rule: This new rule applies to defenders who are the last defensive option in a team who we provide an exception to as the 4th of 5th most owned defender from one team if they offer a different value. For Example, if Chelsea or Spurs have three defenders with 10% plus ownership, and their 4th defender choice has downwards of 10% ownership, we will include them as a differential, as they are outside of the common conversation when picking defenders, even from within their own squad. This rule will mostly be used when adding defenders from top half clubs, who lack proper differential status for their defensive options.
Midfielders
- Any Midfielder under 8% ownership is classified as a differential.
- Our percentage criteria of 8% is due to a greater wealth of premium midfielders. There is a monopoly of top midfielders for most Premier League clubs, leaving only a handful of Midfielders that provide differential options on a weekly basis.
Forwards
- The top 10 most owned Forwards in the FPL at any given time can not be touched as a differential.
- Any Forward outside of the 10% ownership range, who is not in the top 10 owned forwards.
DIFFERENTIALS: GAMEWEEK PERFORMANCE (GW35)
Our scoring procedure is exactly the same as the FPL's, and each week a good barometer of success is whether or not our weekly selections outscore the average points for a Gameweek. Each week the results vary due to rotation, and unpredictable scorelines, which applies more so to differential players. We have an invested interest each and every week at finding the different players to make a difference, especially since it is easy to say Aguero or Kane will get on the score sheet.

We do not select a back-up player for the differentials we bank on – that’s the whole point, being a wildcard.
The selection percentage and player price is accurate with the posting of the article.

Weekly Differentials (GW36)
Goalkeepers (1/10):
Martin Dubravka (NEW)
Here at The Hype Train we have been huge fans of Newcastle’s new goalkeeper, ever since his debut the Slovak has been a terrific addition to squad in good form. West Brom travel to St James Park, a place where Dubravka has kept all his clean sheets for the Toon so far in his Premier League career. Rafa Benitez has got his team ticking, and the Spaniard will fancy his chances against the Premier League’s basement club, and so do we.
Defenders (4/10):
Virgil van Dijk (LIV), Jan Bednarek (SOU), Vincent Kompany (MCI), Kieran Trippier (TOT)
Four defenders are included in the differentials, each for separate reasons. Liverpool’s Dutchman has been selected because of Liverpool’s incredible home record this season where they are yet to taste defeat. Virgil van Dijk has been a revelation to a leaky defence and with Stoke struggling to score goals of their own you’d favour the Reds continuing their run at Anfield.
Speaking of former Southampton players, we turn our attention to the South Coast where Jan Bednarek is making an impression in Mark Hughes team. Currently priced at £4.1mil, the budget option is a good addition to your wildcard team moving into GW37, and this week the Saints host Bournemouth in the derby dubbed the ‘South Coast Clash’, the last two fixtures have been tight affairs, and in the same fixture last season the two clubs eked out a goalless draw. At such a value price Bednarek can’t be ignored.
Vincent Kompany is next up, with the Belgian defender taking his place in Pep’s side since overcoming even more injury problems. It looks like the Man City captain will continue holding down a place in the newly crowned Premier League champions, and no matter the match you expect them to be excellent value for a clean sheet, especially when they retain possession like it’s nobody’s business.
Lastly, we have Kieran Trippier who we fancy to be the best differential in this fixture, and to be honest we are gambling on the English full-back. Throughout the season Spurs have rotated Trippier and Aurier, and we are taking the roulette wheel with this differential pick.
Midfielders (4/10):
Wilfried Zaha (CRY), Theo Walcott (EVE), Alexis Sanchez (MUN), Eden Hazard (CHE)
Four midfielders in the differentials this week, and there are two players in form (Zaha and Walcott), and then there is two midfielders who are the best options in their fixtures (Sanchez and Hazard. We don’t need to explain Zaha or Walcott, they are the current form players for their respective squads, so you expect some sort of impact from either of them.
Eden Hazard is just as simple, he is Chelsea’s most talented player, so you go into this fixture thinking ‘Eden Hazard could do some real damage’, which hasn’t always been the case this season, which makes Hazard even more differential than you wanted to believe.
Alexis Sanchez is the most interesting differential this week, it will be the first time that the Chilean faces his old teammates since he moved to Manchester United from Arsenal. Just imagine the scenes, it is 0-0 at the 80th minute and nothing has been decided, and Sanchez steals the ball from Mustafi or Bellerin, and slots it past Petr Cech, erupting Old Trafford into a sea of noise. Those are the scenes that make the Premier League such a dramatic league to watch, and those are the scenes in our heads thinking about a game like this. Marko Arnautovic pulled off a performance against Stoke and celebrated with the Hammers logo in front of his old fans, and we can see Sanchez celebrating in front of Arsene Wenger. Sanchez is solely being picked this week for his potential to trigger one of the greatest Arsenal Fan TV moments of all time.
Forwards (1/10):
Ashley Barnes (BUR)
Just one forward, but Barnes is the differential captain this week, more below.
Key Differential: Ashley Barnes (BUR)
Here we are again, with a Burnley forward as the differential captain instead of a more established option like Hazard or Sanchez, and here we are again explaining that this season doesn’t make any sense.
Burnley haven’t made sense this season, they have defied every label placed on them by professional pundits, once touted as relegation fodder the Clarets have rallied behind a shared ethos, under Sean Dyche they are a well-oiled machine whose work rate is their biggest attribute. The European dreamers have quality in all positions, but probably their best attribute is making opportunities for Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood leading the line.
No matter what the circumstance the Clarets are forcing the issue, and with Gudmundsson proving to be a great playmaker, there is always a chance. Burnley host Brighton this weekend, and the Seagulls have proven to possess a leaky defence, and with Dyche rallying his men to push for a European place you’d expect the home side to have the advantage.

The previous fixture ended: Brighton 0-0 Burnley
The last clean sheet that Brighton had was in GW21 away to Newcastle United. The Seagulls have conceded two or more goals since then in 9 fixtures.
Brighton haven’t tasted victory in their last four fixtures.
Brighton haven’t won away from home since GW11 when they beat Swansea by a lone goal scored by Glenn Murray.
Burnley haven’t won their last two fixtures, but before that they won five consecutive games (W5, D1, L1)
Burnley have scored in their last eight consecutive fixtures.
Ashley Barnes has started the last consecutive seventeen games for Burnley, the forward has been a staple, one that has barely been rotated this whole season.
Unlike Alexis Sanchez, and Eden Hazard, Ashley Barnes has something that the premium differentials don’t have…consistency. Last season that wasn’t the case, you’d have called us crazy to put Barnes ahead of either Hazard or Sanchez. This season however the rules of the game have changed, and Ashley Barnes is an underrated option, because he plays for Burnley. The Clarets have dared to be brave this season and it has worked so far this season.
