WEEKLY WILDCARDS 2017/18: FPL Gameweek 34
Ahead of each round of Premier League games The Hype Train analyses the best wildcard player options for your Fantasy Premier League teams. Historically, weekly FPL Dream Team’s comprise of mostly differential players whose selection falls with a low selection percentage of overall players, to which there is no doubt that their influence cannot be ignored. With such an abundance of points coming from the FPL’s hidden gems The Hype Train selects one player from each Premier League match in the upcoming Gameweek to decide who could be the differential that sets your team apart. All aboard.
WILDCARDS: WHAT IS A DIFFERENTIAL PLAYER?
The rules for the 2015/16 season were easy enough to follow. The only rule was that a player had be to selected by less than 5% of the FPL's populace. With 2016/17's price changes, and player selection trends, we were been forced to revise our rules on what constitutes a differential. Now in the 2017/18 season, after testing the waters with selection, there are just not enough differentials with the classification in each position from years past, so we have introduced position specific rules regarding what is and isn't a wildcard/differential player in the FPL that we believe is representative to the game this season.
Goalkeepers
- Any shot stopper outside of the top 8 selected. A differential Goalkeeper is now considered outside of the top bracket due to the overwhelming ownership selection % of the top 8 GK's for any one Gameweek.
- A GK's ownership must not exceed 10%
Defenders
- A Defender's ownership must fall below 8%, with the top 20 owned defenders all harbouring 8% ownership or more.
- The Outsider Rule: This new rule applies to defenders who are the last defensive option in a team who we provide an exception to as the 4th of 5th most owned defender from one team if they offer a different value. For Example, if Chelsea or Spurs have three defenders with 10% plus ownership, and their 4th defender choice has downwards of 10% ownership, we will include them as a differential, as they are outside of the common conversation when picking defenders, even from within their own squad. This rule will mostly be used when adding defenders from top half clubs, who lack proper differential status for their defensive options.
Midfielders
- Any Midfielder under 8% ownership is classified as a differential.
- Our percentage criteria of 8% is due to a greater wealth of premium midfielders. There is a monopoly of top midfielders for most Premier League clubs, leaving only a handful of Midfielders that provide differential options on a weekly basis.
Forwards
- The top 10 most owned Forwards in the FPL at any given time can not be touched as a differential.
- Any Forward outside of the 10% ownership range, who is not in the top 10 owned forwards.
DIFFERENTIALS: GAMEWEEK PERFORMANCE (GW33)
Our scoring procedure is exactly the same as the FPL's, and each week a good barometer of success is whether or not our weekly selections outscore the average points for a Gameweek. Each week the results vary due to rotation, and unpredictable scorelines, which applies more so to differential players. We have an invested interest each and every week at finding the different players to make a difference, especially since it is easy to say Aguero or Kane will get on the score sheet.

GAMEWEEK WILDCARD DIFFERENTIALS
For each FPL Gameweek we select a wildcard player from each game.
We do not select a back-up player for the differentials we bank on – that’s the whole point, being a wildcard.
The selection percentage and player price is accurate with the posting of the article.
Our rundowns of player selections are representative of the Premier League’s TV fixture list.
Weekly Differentials (GW34)
The time has finally arrived for the second Double Gameweek of the 2017/18 season. Spurs, Man United, and Leicester are the main teams that people are prioritising this week, and no doubt that David de Gea will be a popular pick with two comfortable fixtures for the Red Devils. We are selecting fourteen differentials this week, one from each game, but there are two players that feature for both their respective sides. The big hint is that they are heavy hitting midfielders from teams in the top five of the Premier League table.
Goalkeepers (0/14):

In a double-gameweek there are more valuable options in other parts of the pitch. The only goalkeeper who plays twice that should be considered is Kasper Schmeichel.
Defenders (6/14)
Alfie Mawson (SWA), James Milner (LIV), Vincent Kompany (MCI), Shkodran Mustafi (ARS), Davinson Sánchez (TOT), Benjamin Chilwell (LEI)
There are plenty of defenders on show for the GW34, and that is because normally there are always plenty of defenders that go under the radar during double-gameweeks.
The only defender who doesn’t make sense is Vincent Kompany, where Man City travel to Wembley to play Spurs. The City Captain didn’t play in Europe against Liverpool and is very much getting all his minutes managed in the Premier League. We expect this fixture to be a close call, and potentially with few goals between the clubs, Man City are out of form currently but don’t let that sway you from the fact that a reaction could be on the cards, and it could be at Wembley that the Citizens clinch the Premier League trophy.
Most neutrals banking on Kane might also suffer the effects of karma after the England international went out of his way to steal that Christian Eriksen goal in the last Gameweek against Stoke.
Elsewhere...
Alfie Mawson against a goal shy Everton makes sense.
James Milner, playing in midfield, at home to Bournemouth makes sense. It also helps that Liverpool have a lack of depth in central midfield with a few injuries to key players like Emre Can.
Shkodran Mustafi against a low scoring Newcastle makes sense.
Davinson Sánchez away to Brighton, who struggle against top teams at home, makes sense.
Benjamin Chilwell, a Double Gameweek player, at home to a struggling Southampton, makes sense.
Midfielders (7/14):
Eden Hazard (CHE), Wilfried Zaha (CRY), Roberto Pereyra (WAT), Alexis Sanchez (MUN), Marko Arnautovic (WHU)
Seven midfield picks from five players, meaning that two of them are selected twice. That’s right, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Man United’s Alexis Sanchez are the big two names that will feature twice in GW34. Starting with Hazard, we have selected the Belgian because not only do Chelsea have two decent fixtures against Southampton and Burnley, but because there has been a lapse of confidence of their defence. Antonio Conte loves to rotate his full-backs, and his central defenders, but the one man immune to critique is Eden Hazard. Surely, over two games the heavily priced midfielder is going to get a return.
Alexis Sanchez is our differential captain and we have gone into more detail about the Chilean further down the article.
The other three midfielders are obvious picks, starting with Watford’s Roberto Pereyra, the Argentine is an in-form player with seventeen fantasy points from his last two fixtures, and against Huddersfield we like the odds of the midfielder continuing his upward trajectory. Ever since Will Hughes has returned to the team they are more balanced, and a greater attacking threat.
The second obvious selection is Wilfried Zaha who has been at it again, collecting fantasy points along the way. Even as Crystal Palace dip in and out of form the Ivorian winger has been an ever present for them, and as eyes this week are on the teams who play twice, you’d be quick to forget the guile of Zaha who is the Eagles driving force.
Lastly, step forward Marko Arnautovic. The Austrian midfielder scored against his former club Stoke earlier in the season, and we were dumb not to select him for that encounter, and we aren’t going to make that mistake again. Arnautovic proved to be the difference versus Southampton, and here at The Hype Train we are convinced that if he was still at Stoke then it might be role reversal between the Hammers and Potters. Stoke really shouldn’t have sold to a relegation rival, it is biting them right where it hurts.
Forwards (1/14):
Ashley Barnes (BUR)
Just the one forward in the Double Gameweek fixtures, and that man is the in-form Burnley forward Ashley Barnes. The forward may have not made it five from five, but his form cannot be ignored. Leicester have frustrated the fantasy community in a run of good fixtures with only one clean sheet against Brighton, and Sean Dyche has the Clarets ticking again which isn’t good news for the Foxes. Ashley Barnes is also a great option for the next week in the reduced Gameweek.
Key Differential: Alexis Sanchez (MUN)
How typical of Sanchez to start showing his true colours in and around the Double Gameweek period of the season, the Chilean is a notorious player when his team plays twice. During his time at Arsenal the demand for Sanchez in a Double Gameweek was through the roof, and now that he has picked up form for his new club Manchester United there is once again a buzz about the potential of the winger for GW34.
We have discussed Sanchez before in the differentials and the stats show that Sanchez loves scoring against teams at the bottom half of the table, and there are two of them in one week to face. West Brom have opened the floodgates, and Bournemouth’s expansive way of playing always invites pressure.
Ignore Sanchez at your peril, it was once said, and for the few that decide to put him in their teams they will be hoping for repeats of seasons past. Sanchez, forever the differential due to his price tag, could be the player of week when it is all said and done.

For the final portion of our captaincy article this week we return to Manchester with another one of their attacking talents, as Alexis Sanchez has made the cut as captain for @HypeTrainSam's weekly differentials. We here at Hype Train HQ different must think twice about Sanchez's inclusion as Wildcard Captain ahead of Double Gameweek 34, as the Chilean has a history of performing when the spotlight is on him in the end of season fixtures.
It's a new club for Alexis, which of course is a potential concern. Sanchez helped make Arsenal tick, especially when Double Gameweeks rolled about, managing goals against Stoke (A) and Sunderland (H) during Gameweek 37.
Sanchez is occupying the left-wing for Man United and is on set-piece duty for the Red Devils, which should include penalty kicks should any be awarded.
Form is also a massive position for Alexis heading into DGW34, managing 24 FPL points from his last 2 fixtures against Swansea (GW32) and Man City (GW33), which is exactly the territory we'd love to see the Midfielder in come the end of the Gameweek with fixtures against relegation bound West Brom (H) and an inconsistent Bournemouth (A) on the menu.
Sanchez was at the heart of United's final 2 goals at the Etihad, assisting Paul Pogba's second goal, and providing the cross for Chris Smalling's winner.
In an Arsenal shirt this season, Sanchez made a fifteen-minute substitute appearance against Bournemouth during Gameweek 4, before providing his first attacking return of the season in the form of an assist against West Brom during a 2-0 home win for Arsenal during Gameweek 7.
