Every week The Hype Train analyses the best wildcard options for your Fantasy Premier League teams. Weekly Wildcards: 2015/16 Season Review
The pursuit of Fantasy Premier League glory never hinges on the success of key 'essential' players, instead finding a differential with very little player ownership can help drive your team up mini-leagues and the global points ladders. The Hype Train invested a great deal of time last season trying to unearth the FPL gems that lay just beneath the surface of our thinking, and we have taken the journey to review our efforts from the 2015/16 season. We're reviewing what worked, what didn't, the teams and players to rely on, and those to avoid. All aboard as we review a season of Weekly Wildcard picks.

DIFFERENTIALS: WHAT IS A WILDCARD PLAYER?
The rules for the 2015/16 season were easy enough to follow. The only rule was that a player had be to selected by less than 5% of the FPL's populace. With 2016/17's price changes, and player selection trends, we have been forced to revise our rules on what constitutes a differential. After testing the waters with selection, there are just not enough differentials with the 2015/16 classification in each position, so we have introduced position specific rules regarding what is and isn't a wildcard/differential player in the FPL that we believe is representative to the game this season.
We have set new boundaries for selection, and these rules listed below will be running throughout the 2016/17 FPL season.
Goalkeepers
- Any shot stopper outside of the top 5 selected. A differential Goalkeeper is now considered outside of the top bracket due to the overwhelming ownership selection % of the top 5 GKs for any one Gameweek.
- A GK's ownership must not exceed 10%
Defenders
- Due to the pricing structure, a differential Defender is the uncommon picks for any one side. There is one or two overwhelming options for most teams in the FPL that consume ownership percentage.
- We cannot pick the top 2 selected Defenders, unless they fall below 7% ownership. We can only pick the second most selected for the same reasoning. This ensures 2 wildcard options are available for all teams.
Midfielders
- Any Midfielder under 8% ownership is classified as a differential.
- Our percentage criteria of 8% is due to a greater wealth of premium midfielders. There is a monopoly of top midfielders for most Premier League clubs, leaving only a handful of Midfielders that provide differential options on a weekly basis.
Forwards
- We cannot pick the most highly selected Forwards in the FPL, most of which are over 10% player ownership. The exception is if the top selected Forward from any club falls below 9%.
- Our percentage criteria of 9% is high because there is already a monopoly of Forwards, and anything outside of that is considered to be a differential.
DIFFERENTIALS: GAMEWEEK PERFORMANCE (GW33)
Our scoring procedure is exactly the same as the FPL's, and each week a good barometer of success is whether or not our weekly selections outscore the average points for a Gameweek. Each week the results vary due to rotation, and unpredictable scorelines, which applies more so to differential players. We have an invested interest each and every week at finding the different players to make a difference, especially since it is easy to say Aguero or Kane will get on the score sheet.

Here at The Hype Train there is very little to be hyped about for this double gameweek, people are bending over backwards and playing their wildcards for this set of fixtures and we are scratching our heads in confusion as to why you would even bother considering it. The problem we have seen is that the teams who play twice are not in favourable positions and wasting wildcards or dropping points is just too risky to consider. Chelsea have a comfortable home game; Liverpool and Spurs are against Crystal Palace which should deplete the Eagles, Lukaku returns to haunt West Ham, the Manchester 'derby' takes place, and when you look through the cracks of the gameweek you see an absolute gem of a fixture between Hull and Watford which is being massively overlooked due to everything else going on this week. There should be no reason for drastic change this week, especially because the more important gameweek in GW37 includes assets from Spurs and Chelsea, just in summary this double gameweek looks as if it may be very irrelevant and just be a giant trap for FPL managers to make silly choices.
It is business as usual with us at The Hype Train because each fixture must be looked at in regard to the 'best' differential option to have in your team. That is where Afobe, De Bruyne, and Wijnaldum come into play. All of them are superior options for the individual fixtures, that is the blunt reality of it. You'd fancy Wijnaldum resuming his magnificent home run, De Bruyne scoring in both 'derbies', and Afobe netting against Boro than just plain hoping that your double gameweek differentials pay-off. Afobe is a better option than Negredo in this fixture for example, you would be conflicted about having the Spaniard in your team for any fixture, and there are never any guarantees in the 'derby', and Liverpool have started grinding out results.
The option of the Hull game is a big one, we are really excited about the potential of Marco Silva's Tigers whenever they play at home. Oumar Niasse has been a pivotal part of their fight for survival, so expect him to be among the goals tomorrow. Watford have their forty points so this might lead to the Hornets being less inclined to play for a result (it happens, look at Crystal Palace a few seasons ago under Pardew as a prime example). Niasse is just one example of great options being overlooked, like Ozil and Shaqiri racking up serious points but not even being considered as legitimate options against teams who can't defend. The last notable mention goes to Pedro, just because Chelsea will win this match, and he must return sooner rather than later, he is the risky pick because there isn't a lot of buzz around the Spaniard, but the beauty of any differential is that they can turn it on in a second’s notice. Here is our take on the three players we have chosen for the double gameweek. Double Gameweek 34 Players: Townsend, Barragan, and Bailly
Picking three differentials that you could have for this game was tougher than it looked, mostly because of the fear of rotation. All three managers of Boro, Palace, and United have all said they would utilise their whole squad. The key question to ask yourself is: is this player expendable within the team? If the answer if yes then they are not a double gameweek options. In relation to our three picks Townsend has been instrumental in wins over Chelsea and Arsenal recently and is also on some of the set-piece responsibility, I can see Palace not wanting to rotate their team so that they can keep their momentum going on their culling of top six teams. Townsend has four FPL returns from his last six fixtures and is making life easy for Zaha and Benteke, so there is no way that Big Sam is going to drop the winger from his team.
It is even easier for the explanation of the defensive duo of Barragan and Bailly...they are key pieces of their respective defences. I can't imagine either Boro or Man United defence without these two players, and usually you'll see less rotation from central defenders. Bailly and Barragan have got solid minutes under their belts in the past six weeks so their places won't be under threat. Barragan is cheap, and Bailly is mysteriously earning points without even playing well. Both teams are in the same vein too, they will be expected by their managers to keep it tight away from home so there is potential for these two players to pick up a good amount of points in GW34.
