The one aspect of the FPL that takes can often make or break your evening, is the award of bonus points. What can be Evaluated?
Our good friends over at @FFPundits kindly retweeted our overall points tally breakdown, and it prompted a discussion about the use of the formation teams should adopt. People were quick to look at the 3-5-2 formation as a viable option going forward, to use instead of the popular 3-4-3 formation. Whilst on paper it sounds good, the reality is that most teams usually field 5+ midfielders in any one game. It is no surprise Leicester have the most attacking points – they play with a lot of strikers. Liverpool don’t, and would be relegated based off their Forward points, even though they have scored the most goals in the league. In general, you’ll be lucky if a team will field just the one forward player for a game, compared to the 5, so it is understandable why the figure for midfielders is heavily inflated.
Defenders too have a better score because clean sheet points, and goal returns are worth more. Goalkeepers, as we’ve been saying since day one, have very little to choose from in terms of points, and are probably not worth a transfer, even if you think their run of fixtures is terrible. Just 4 points separate 12 teams in the Goalkeeper points tally.
Bonus Points findings help solidify the idea that big sides get more points (obviously) and their players are worth sticking with, as there are also legitimate options elsewhere in Jermain Defoe, Snodgrass, Allen, and Chadli.
What this is a good indication of is if you were to play a wildcard right now, what should you go with… Liverpool midfielders, Chelsea defenders, and yes 3 viable forward options, but a budget one to go alongside an Aguero, Lukaku, or Costa. If you are thinking of your own spring clean, then we think that this is a good starting point at figuring out what to do with your FPL finances… Want to show us your squads for next week for advice and tips, get in touch through our Twitter account, @RealHypeTrain.
